European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
