Man confesses to sexual offenses against boys at summer program
A man who laced treats with sedative and gave them to children at a summer camp in the region has admitted sexual crimes against two boys who were nine and 10.
The accused was arrested after eight minors and one adult fell ill at the facility in July.
The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the judicial center on the end of the week.
However, he disputed one particular crime he was accused of, which was involving a nine-year-old child.
Ruben was remanded in custody before a subsequent court date on 28 November.
'Candy game'
The prosecutor, prosecuting, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.
She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a youth camp which he managed.
The man conducted a "treat game" with the children, the prosecutor said, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and request they to consume candy "as quickly as they can".
She stated to the judge the defendant had conducted this practice with the boys "repeatedly", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the following morning.
She stated Ruben had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had concerns in summer 2025.
The prosecutor added: "Recently" his stepson had concerns about the activities, justifiably.
"They resolved" to investigate in the man's possessions."
The legal counsel said materials including lubricant, ointment and syringes were located, and his family member notified the police about his worries.
She explained Ruben went on to play the "candy game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were all sick the next day.
"Authorities" had not responded by that point," she stated further.
The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the situation.
The legal representative stated the minors were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the stepson notified the police again.
She said the defendant then conducted the "candy game" in a space of five youngsters.
