Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
