The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
As any major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
